President Rodrigo Duterte announced on Monday that “at this time,” he will not endorse any presidential candidate in the forthcoming May 2022 elections.

Almost all of the contenders vying to be Duterte’s successor requested his endorsement, according to Duterte.

“If I perceive that it is —- my opinion and even endorsement would be beneficial kung kailangan” (if necessary). But for now, I’m declaring that I’m not endorsing anyone,” he declared on Monday in a prerecorded Talk to the People.

He did say, though, that if there is “a strong reason” to change his mind, he will declare which candidate he will support.

“Right now, I’m not interested in supporting anyone.” But if I believe there is a need to speak up and raise a fuss because hindi naman —- pero (maybe not —-but) you’ve just put the government itself in jeopardy,” he added.

Despite the fact that all candidates are “qualified” to run for president, Duterte stated that “some” of them have views that he disagrees with.

He didn’t say who the candidates were.

There are now ten contenders standing for president in the May 9 elections.

“May iba kasi diyan na may ideology ang nakasabit eh,” added Duterte. “Whoever they are, they are all qualified to be president, kung sino man sila (whoever they are).” I hope so, but… Okay, guy, ang tingin ko sa kanila (I believe they’re all fine) except for a few reservations about the risk of slipping into the clutches of —- well, falling into a communist trap…”

He also stated that talks with the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front are “too late” (CPP-NPA-NDF).

For the 2019 elections, the ruling party, the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), has yet to nominate a presidential candidate.

Last month, the PDP-Laban elected Duterte’s daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, as vice president.

When asked if Duterte’s statement will influence the PDP-choice Laban’s of the candidate, Acting Presidential Spokesperson Karlo Nograles said consensus-building and conversations among officials are still underway.

“Patuloy pa rin itong pinaguusapan ng PDP-Laban, yung National Executive Committee pati yung mga leaders ng PDP-Laban, dahil ang sinabi ng Pangulo kagabi ay at this time, wala pa siyang sinusuportahan na kandidato subalit sinabi niya rin unless there is a compelling reason for me
