In preparation for the May 9 national and municipal elections, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Negros Oriental has scheduled a series of training sessions for technicians and teachers who make up the electoral board on the usage of vote-counting machines (VCMs).

The training for technicians would take place from February 21 to 27, according to Lionel Marco Castillano, Comelec’s provincial election supervisor-designate for Negros Oriental, who told the Philippine News Agency on Tuesday.

The training for the electoral board (previously known as the board of election inspectors) will take place from March 7 to 29, according to him.

Each electoral board’s chairman and poll clerk will be expected to attend the training, he added.

Technicians will be “restricted exclusively to troubleshooting problems with the devices but have nothing to do with the SD cards,” according to Castillano.

Although the machines have yet to be installed here, he noted, the Comelec has already trained the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to cascade the training on VCM use through webinars with Comelec trainers.

“It will still be a live-in seminar/training,” he explained, “but attendees will be forced to submit to antigen testing” for the coronavirus illness 2019 (Covid-19).

The location(s) for the VCM training will need to be decided soon, according to Castillano.
