The collaboration between the DA and private companies has sped up the recovery from ASF.
With a new breeder farm in Nueva Ecija, the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the private sector resumed their collaboration to rehabilitate the hog industry hit by African swine fever (ASF).
The DA has allocated PHP80 million to JG Agroventures Inc. and Pig Improvement Company (PIC5,000-sow )’s level breeder nucleus farm in Barangay Sta. Rita, Quezon town, which is now under development.
The cutting-edge facility will be stocked with great grandparent breeders, whose progeny, or grandparent (GP) piglets, will be sold and dispersed to commercial and clustered backyard swine raisers throughout Nueva Ecija and Luzon.
In a video conference on Tuesday, DA’s National Livestock Program Director Ruth Sonaco said the agency and the private sector are striving to restore the hog inventory to pre-ASF levels.
“Forging ties with the private sector has always been Secretary William Dar’s mandate because they have the technical competence and funding.” As a result, we (DA) connect them with our affiliated offices that require their services,” she explained.
Under the Integrated National Swine Production Initiatives for Recovery and Expansion (INSPIRE) initiative, the Nueva Ecija farm will assist the DA in speeding up hog repopulation.
To formalize the cooperation with JG Agroventures and PIC, Sonaco will create a memorandum of understanding.
JG filed for a PHP2.5 billion loan from the Land Bank of the Philippines to fund the project.
“We expect JG Agroventures to initially provide the DA with 1,000 GP quality breeders every farrowing, which we will distribute to commercial and clustered backyard swine raisers, as well as farmers’ cooperatives and organizations participating in our INSPIRE program,” Sonaco added.
Other significant agricultural corporations, such as Univet Nutrition and Animal Healthcare Company and Charoen Pokphand Foods Philippines, Corp., are working with the DA to revitalize the swine industry (CP Foods).
CP Foods has promised to produce an additional 600,000 fatteners this year after investing PHP500 million in a pig breeder farm in Isabela.
For its feed mill operation, it also intends to purchase at least 300,000 metric tons of yellow corn from farmers.
According to Sonaco, the country’s current hog population is around 9.4 million. The pre-ASF population was estimated to be around 12 million hogs.
