The Department of Education is bolstering its homeschooling program.
As an alternative delivery modality, the Department of Education (DepEd) has strengthened its homeschooling program (ADM).
The homeschooling program, which was first introduced in 1997, is one of the ADMs that any public or private school can offer to meet the requirements of students who are unable to attend conventional school due to medical issues or familial situations.
“We have reinforced our Homeschooling Program to ensure our learners have choices in getting a great education,” Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones stated in a news release on Thursday.
“This will benefit our students who require more consistent parental support and supervision, particularly in light of our present public health situation,” she noted.
The department has amended its guidelines, standards, and processes for the abovementioned program, which gives families options in deciding on and addressing their children’s access difficulties, in DepEd Order No. 001, s. 2022.
If the country continues under an emergency, the focus of instruction will be on the Most Essential Learning Competencies, according to the amended policy (MELCs). The K to 12 Curriculum will be introduced for the program if the MELCs are no longer used in subsequent school years.
The directive also emphasizes that parents or guardians are the major agents of the teacher-learning process, including its design and execution, and are responsible for monitoring their children’s work and progress.
Meanwhile, school administrators are being told to choose a homeschool coordinator who will be in charge of registering students, monitoring their progress, and assisting parents or guardians during the implementation.
Homeschool students should also have access to print and digital textbooks and modules, as well as a comfortable learning environment at home and a learning plan that identifies the study area, learning competencies, and learning tasks.
All learners enrolled in the program must complete the National Career Assessment Examination and the National Achievement Test to determine their academic level, strengths and weaknesses, and knowledge gained throughout the year.
Both public and private schools may offer the homeschool curriculum as an ADM.
Private schools must receive a permit in order to provide the curriculum, while public schools must obtain regional officer approval.
