On Thursday, the Supreme Court (SC) announced the rearrangement of its three divisions, which will take effect on February 17.

Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo said in Special Order No. 2869 dated February 9 that he will chair the Supreme Court’s First Division, with Associate Justice Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa as working chairperson and Associate Justices Samuel Gaerlan, Japar Dimaampao, and Henri Jean Paul Inting as members.

Meanwhile, Associate Justices Ramon Paul Hernando, Rodil Zalameda, Ricardo Rosario, and Jose Midas Marquez make up the Second Division, which is presided by Senior Associate Justice Estela Perlas-Bernabe.

Marquez has also been added to the Third Division, which is chaired by Associate Justice Marvic Leonen and includes Associate Justices Amy Lazaro-Javier, Mario Lopez, and Jhosep Lopez.

After Associate Justice Rosmari Carandang bowed out of the judiciary last January 9 after attaining the statutory retirement age of 70, the high tribunal now has 14 magistrates.

The Judicial and Bar Council had previously presented President Rodrigo Duterte with a shortlist of eight candidates to replace Carandang.

Former Commission on Audit chair Michael Aguinaldo, retired Commission on Elections commissioner Antonio Kho Jr., Court of Appeals Justices Maria Filomena Singh, Apolinario Bruselas Jr., Ramon Cruz, Sandiganbayan Presiding Justice Amparo Cabotaje-Tang and Associate Justice Geraldine Faith Econg, and SC Deputy Court Administrator Raul Villanueva is among the officials.

With Perlas-resignation Bernabe’s on May 14, another vacancy in the SC is expected this year.
