BAGUIO CITY, PHILIPPINES — According to the Health Services Office, the majority of the pediatric patients infected with the coronavirus illness 2019 (Covid-19) here were infected by a family member within their home (HSO).

According to data analysis conducted by the city’s HSO and the University of the Philippines Baguio–Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (UPB-DMCS), a total of 1,795 children aged 5 to 11 were infected with Covid-19 between March 2020 and February 8, 2022, according to Aileen Refuerzo, the city government’s chief information officer.

She stated in a press release that the city’s largest number of infections for the age group was 498 during the Delta Covid-19 surge in September last year, while 318 youngsters were infected during the Omicron wave in January.

According to the HSO, the infections among youngsters were not attributable to infection from other persons, but rather from family members through the home and workplace transmission, particularly during the peak.

“Despite steps to restrict minors’ movement at home, according to Dr. (Rowena) Galpo (HSO chief), an infection cannot be abated due to home and workplace transmission of their housemates and or their parents,” Refuerzo noted.

Minors are still at risk, according to the HSO and UPB–DMCS data, because immunization is still being introduced in the city and other parts of the country.

The vaccination of children aged 5 to 11 years old began on February 7 in the National Capital Region.

The local administration in Baguio City continues to accept the registration of young children for vaccination.

A total of 32,211 minors between the ages of 12 and 17 have been properly vaccinated.
