MANILA – The Court of Appeals (CA) has upheld a man’s conviction for stabbing to death his neighbor during a drinking session on the night of the 2016 national elections in Batangas.

Dante Aguilar’s sentence of up to 12 years in jail for homicide issued by the Batangas Regional Trial Court Branch 04 in 2019 for the killing of Roger Medrano on May 9, 2016, was upheld by the appellate court.

Associate Justice Ronaldo Martin’s 13-page ruling, dated February 2 and published online Tuesday, also ordered Aguilar to pay PHP156,500 in civil and moral damages, as well as the family’s funeral expenses.

After raising a commotion at the polling station since his name was not on the voters’ list, Medrano, a tricycle driver, requested Aguilar to drink with him in Sitio Alikabog, Bauan.

The victim began blaming Aguilar for the omission of his name in the middle of the drinking session.

Aguilar stated the victim was the one who attacked him with a knife, but he was able to take possession of the weapon.

He admitted that he, too, was inebriated and had no recollection of what had happened subsequently.

The victim had numerous stab wounds to the chest, according to the medical inspection, and was confirmed dead when he arrived at the Bauan General Hospital.
