Ping and Tito are the ‘greatest combination’ against corruption and drugs, according to an ex-DA head.
MANILA, Philippines — Senatorial aspirant and former Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol stated on Wednesday that Partido Reporma standard-bearer Senator Panfilo ‘Ping’ Lacson and his running mate Senate President Vicente ‘Tito’ Sotto III will handle the country’s corruption and illegal drug crisis.
When challenged about his decision to support and campaign for the Lacson-Sotto ticket despite his political ties to President Rodrigo Duterte, whom he helped win the presidency in the 2016 polls, Piñol said in a statement.
“As long as there is corruption, there is a cause for people to vote for Ping Lacson.” “As long as drugs exist, there will always be a need to maintain the anti-drug campaign,” said Piñol, a Nationalist People’s Coalition party colleague of Sotto’s (NPC).
Piñol, a former chair of the Mindanao Development Authority, believes that only the Lacson-Sotto team has devised long-term plans for the country that will outlast the country’s current issues, such as the coronavirus outbreak.
“So, what are the recurring issues?” Criminality, corruption, and drugs are all on the rise. Covid, maski mawala ‘yung problemang ‘yan, nandiyan pa ‘yung problemang ‘yan (Even if you get rid of Covid-19, those problems would remain). And these are the problems that Ping Lacson is dealing with. As a result, I believe that constancy is the key,” he stated.
Piñol has pledged his full support for the Lacson-Sotto ticket, claiming that he has turned down invitations from other political parties to join their teams in exchange for votes in his first senatorial attempt.
When an associate from another party sought his help in launching their campaign headquarters in Bukidnon, he stated he had to decline since it would be against his values because he had already declared his support for Lacson and Sotto.
“Pangit tingnan kasi ang presidential candidate ko si Ping Lacson, ang vice-presidential candidate ko si Tito Sotto,” said the candidate. Of course, going there would have gotten me a lot of votes. ‘Hindi ka namin suportahan,’ nagtampo sa akin, sabi niya. ‘Wala akong magagawa e,’ sabi ko. Because my presidential candidate is Ping Lacson, and my vice-presidential candidate is Tito Sotto, may prinsipyo tayo e’ (supporting another party) is not a smart idea. Of course, going there would have gotten me a lot of votes. They expressed regret and stated that they would not be helping me. “I said, ‘I can’t do anything because I have my morals,'” Piñol explained.
Equal pay for women and men in the workplace
Guillermo Eleazar, a senate candidate for the Partido Reporma, said female workers should be treated equally to their male counterparts in the workplace so that Filipinos can thrive in their chosen careers regardless of gender.
Eleazar, a former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, claimed that women have already demonstrated their worth in areas where their male counterparts typically excel, citing examples of female cadets finishing first in their classes at both the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) Academy (PNPA).
He also highlighted the 2020 Grant Thornton annual Women in Corporate report, which said that the Philippines maintained its ranking and even improved its ratio of women in senior business leadership positions, which was released in February last year.
Eleazar remarked that even during the Philippine revolution against the Spaniards, there were Filipino women who held firm to fight for the country’s liberation, such as Gabriela Silang.
“These are just a few examples of how, given the chance, women can make a significant difference.” But I equally know that more work needs to be done to level the playing field for women, particularly those from low-income families,” he remarked.
He stated that establishing gender equality in the workplace should encompass members of the LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) community, implying that women and those who identify as females should be free from discrimination and violence.
