Treat the drug battle as a public health issue, says Vice President bet.
MANILA, Philippines — Instead of focusing on incarcerating drug dealers and users, vice presidential candidate Willie Ong encouraged the government to consider the drug war as a public health issue on Wednesday.
According to Ong, a cardiologist, the drug war should be science-based, and the government should take a health-oriented strategy because drug addiction is a public health concern.
Ong has been emphasizing since the Aksyon Demokratiko’s proclamation event on February 8 that while the battle on drugs is important, rehabilitation must be prioritized.
He underlined the need for psychiatrists and psychologists to assist former drug users in avoiding relapse.
“Kailangang-kailangan ‘yung rehab, ‘yung tulong sa mga drug addict na nasa 2 to 3 million sa ngayon,” says the narrator. Dapat ngayon ngayon ngayon ngay Psychiatrists and psychologists are in short supply. For hindi na sila bumalik, kailangan din may access sa gamot, addiction po ‘yan eh. Apektado ang utak ng users (Rehabilitation is desperately needed.) Help for drug abusers, which is estimated to number between 2 and 3 million people, should be science-based. Psychiatrists, psychologists, and drugs are all needed. Because we’re talking about addiction, their minds are damaged),” he stated in the statement.
Many countries, he added, appear to focus on the “criminal component” of drug addiction, which “ultimately led to the failure of their various anti-illegal drug strategies.”
“Masyado tayong nag-focus sa paghuli, palagay ko.” If we really want to get rid of illegal narcotics, we should address it as a public health issue. ‘Yung United Nations nag-shift din ng attitude.’ (I believe we have been so concentrated on arresting them that we have neglected to engage in discourse with scientific specialists about social protection and healthcare for lunas.) We should address illegal narcotics as a public health issue if we wish to remove them. The United Nations changed its views as well. They understood that social protection and healthcare, rather than imprisonment, are the alternatives after speaking with scientific specialists),” he stated.
Ong also wants the national government to step up efforts to eradicate stigma and discrimination against people who are addicted to drugs.
Prioritize evidence-based therapy for substance use disorders, including behavioral therapies and medication-assisted treatment, said Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso, the presidential candidate’s running mate.
He went on to say that the people can participate in policymaking in areas such as public health, education, law enforcement, science, and healthcare.
“This endeavor comprises guiding offenders to treatment options, combating drug production and trafficking, and offering an opportunity to change drug-addicted communities,” he stated.
