DTI is sure that the Philippines would preserve its EU GSP+ status
MANILA โ Secretary of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Ramon Lopez is sure that the Philippines would be able to maintain the European Union’s Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) privileges (EU).
This comes as the EU Parliament has threatened to temporarily revoke trade benefits for the Philippines owing to alleged human rights violations and a lack of press freedom.
“While their charges against human rights and a lack of press freedom are not new, they are fake news that simply offers erroneous perceptions about the true situation in the Philippines,” Lopez stated in a Viber message.
He stated that the Philippine administration has continued to keep the EU Commission informed about the country’s position.
DTI has facilitated regular GSP+ monitoring missions, with another mission scheduled for the end of the month.
“In acquiring reliable information about the real condition in the country, this procedure is more systematic and organized.” They will also tour projects and marginalized sectors that benefit from the EU GSP+, as well as other stakeholders,” the DTI director noted.
According to Lopez, the Philippine government has also ensured that “rules and regulations of engagement are followed, and those who violate them are prosecuted.”
“It’s terrible that politicians from a large economic bloc are sullying the image of (a) little democratic country of peace-loving Filipinos, and it’s bullying a small country.” They should inquire about the Filipinos in their workplaces or neighborhoods. They should also consult EU citizens and the country’s EU business chambers. “The 72 percent of the populace who gave Philippine President Duterte a high popularity rating can’t be wrong,” he remarked.
Over 6,000 Philippine exports to EU member states are duty-free under the EU GSP+.
Around 25% of Philippine exports to the EU, or EUR2 billion (roughly PHP116.7 billion) in 2021, will benefit from the trade benefits.
