After defeating ASF, MisOr will repopulate hogs.

CITY OF CAGAYAN DE ORO – After identifying “zero” African swine fever (ASF) in the province for the previous 77 days, the provincial administration of Misamis Oriental will begin hog repopulation, according to the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO).

Under the repopulation, PVO chairman Dr. Benjamin Resma said the provincial government will provide assistance to every barangay affected by the ASF, as authorized by Governor Yevgeny Vicente Emano.

“We’ve put together a bundle for each barangay.” We will supply ten female hogs and one male hog. During the flag-raising ceremony, Resma said, “We are intending to offer old hogs so that they will be ready to breed.”

According to him, the ASF has impacted 765 farmers in 99 communities in Misamis Oriental as a result of the PVO’s hog depopulation in 2021.

Last year, the city of El Salvador, as well as the villages of Balingasag and Alubijid, had the highest number of ASF cases reported.

Following the discovery of ASF cases in Barangay Jampason in Initao town and Barangay Pagawan in Manticao town on February 10, 2021, the provincial government promptly banned hog farming throughout the province.

Production of eggs

Despite the hog-raising restriction, Emano provided alternate sources of income to the afflicted farmers, notably the “Itikan sa Kalambuan,” or the cultivation of ducks for egg production.

According to Resma, the impacted hog raisers received 467,781 produced eggs from the livelihood project in the last five months, equating to PHP3,831,785 in cash.

The PVO visits some of the affected locations on a regular basis as part of the ASF recovery program to collect blood samples from live hogs, clean, and administer disinfectants.

The PVO crew visited Sta. Ana hamlet in Tagoloan town, as well as Hinigdaan and Bolisong villages in El Salvador City, recently.

Resma stated that efforts to limit the spread of ASF and assist impacted areas in resuming normal operations will continue.

South Korean investment opportunities

Meanwhile, several executives and officials of a South Korean corporation are visiting the municipality of Claveria in Misamis Oriental.

The officials, with the help of the Department of Agriculture Region 10 (DA-10), paid farm and office visits to various farmers, cooperatives, and associations (FCAs) in order to finalize cooperation with a foreign company for the supply of fresh cassava tubers.

On February 16-18, DA-10 and the Department of Trade and Industry’s Bureau of Investments (DTI-BOI) organized the tour to 13 FCAs.

Malitbog, Salvacion, Kadingilan, Don Carlos, Pangantucan, Maramag, Cabanglasan, and Lantapan were among the other FCAs visited in Bukidnon province.

The FCAs in Claveria and Bukidnon have previously expressed their intention to feed the South Korean firm’s proposed tapioca starch manufacturing plant in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.

The Korean team met with the chairpersons and other farmer-leaders of the various FCAs on their field visits, where they laid out their terms and conditions in preparation for the eventual signing of a marketing agreement between the two parties.

Farmers can also seek loan support from the Agricultural Credit Policy Council (ACPC), the DA’s credit arm, to help with the additional logistics and finance that the FCAs may require for such marketing opportunities, according to DA-10 Executive Director Carlene Collado.

“This year, the agency will continue to implement numerous programs that are currently in the pipeline to help farmers in the region increase agricultural productivity, resiliency, and access to new market linkages,” Callado said.

The Korean buyers’ second batch visit was facilitated by the Field Operations Division’s Cassava Program, DA-10’s Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division, and DTI-BOI.
