300 metric tons of rice for the ‘Odette’ victims have arrived from Japan.

MANILA, Philippines — On Monday, Japan Ambassador to the Philippines Koshikawa Kazuhiko and National Food Authority (NFA) Administrator Judy Carol Dansal greeted the arrival of 300 metric tons of Japanese rice to the NFA warehouse in Valenzuela City under the Asean Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve (APTERR) initiative.

According to a news release issued by NFA on Tuesday, the rice would be delivered and distributed to Typhoon Odette-affected people in Cebu, Bohol, and Surigao del Norte as soon as the APTERR Council gives its permission.

Koshikawa stated at the official inspection of the rice stocks that Japan is completely committed to assisting the Philippines in their efforts to recover from the storm damage.

“We are hopeful that these tons of rice would be supplied shortly to help storm victims,” he said.

APTERR is a regional organization that was founded in 2012 with the goal of improving food security, poverty alleviation, and malnutrition eradication among its member nations.

The APTERR Parties have committed to developing rice stores to help member nations in the event of large-scale natural catastrophes in order to achieve their common aim.

APTERR provided thousands of tons of hoarded rice from Japan to prior typhoon victims in the Philippines, including Super Typhoon Yolanda in 2013, Typhoon Ineng in 2015, and Typhoon Jenny in 2019.

In 2020, Japan will supply 425 metric tons of rice to households affected by the Taal Volcano eruption, while last year, families affected by Covid-19 in Quezon City, Manila, and sections of Bulacan and Cavite received pre-cooked rice.
