40K OFWs are expected to return to Taiwan, according to POLO.

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Taipei stated on Thursday that 40,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are likely to travel for Taiwan after the country reopened its borders to migrant labor.

Labor Attaché Cesar Chavez Jr. noted in a Laging Handa briefing that these comprise 15,000 freshly hired workers and 25,000 returning workers (balik-manggagawa).

“Manufacturing is in high demand because Taiwanese firms prefer our OFWs in semiconductors, computers, and electronics,” Chavez explained.

He also stated that there are 160,000 Filipinos in Taiwan as of December 20, including those who are married to Taiwanese natives and those who have permanent status.

OFWs account for 142,000 of the total, with manufacturing accounting for 85 percent (115,000).

“The majority of them work in semiconductor, chip, computer, and electronics firms. “We dominated that sector, and the majority of the workers are Filipinos,” stated the labor attaché.

“The other 26,000 OFWs in Taiwan are caretakers and domestic workers,” he continued.

Workers entering the host territory, according to Chavez, must undergo a 21-day quarantine.

“They will be quarantined for 14 days at a government facility and then have an additional seven days of self-health management…

However, the Taiwan government and employers are required by law to pay their employees’ salaries during the quarantine time, and the employer and Taiwan government are also responsible for any expenses linked to the quarantine, food, and lodging for the 21-day period,” he noted.

On February 15, the island reopened to migrant laborers.
