With the start of 2022, astronomer Lyudmila Koshman, head of the Moscow Planetarium’s Department of Methodological Support, told TASS that stargazers will be able to see the highest activity of the Quadrantid meteor shower, as well as the New Year’s parade of planets and the largest Sun.

In the early hours of January 4, the Quadrantid stream will reach its height.

Up to 120 meteors every hour, or one or two shooting stars per minute, are expected, according to scientists.

“The conditions for observing meteors [all around Russia] are ideal in 2022.” The optimum time to observe will be between midnight and daybreak when the radiant will be as high above the horizon as possible,” the Russian astronomer remarked.

The Earth will reach perihelion, the closest point in its orbit to the Sun, on January 4th. Our planet will be at its closest approach to the Sun, making the celestial body appear the largest to us.

“The Sun’s visual diameter [on this day] will be the largest in 2022,” Koshman said. “As a result, the celestial body’s disk will appear 3 percent larger than it did in early July when the distance [between the planets] reached its maximum.”

Furthermore, the crescent of the young Moon will join the planets visible in the sky from January 4 to 5. The greatest places to observe the planets will be in Russia’s south, where they will be highest above the horizon.

Comet Leonard will approach the Sun in January, and astronomy enthusiasts will be able to see it.

It will fly within 92 million kilometers of the Sun on January 3.

According to the scientist, the comet will then leave the solar system.

Binoculars or a telescope are the most effective tools for observing these celestial bodies, and the optimal time to do it is about 50 minutes after sunset.
