MANILA, Philippines — Despite global difficulties, the US Embassy in Manila advised citizens should remain focused on the coronavirus disease pandemic of 2019 (Covid-19).

“I’d like to emphasize that, even as the world is concerned about global events and we face serious challenges around the world, the United States remains focused on the pandemic and how we can fight it with partners like the Philippines,” Chargé d’Affaires Heather Variava said Monday night as 769,680 doses of Pfizer vaccines arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Variava’s comments come amid international condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has resulted in the US and some other countries placing sanctions on Moscow that might disrupt global supply chains.

According to her, this takes the total number of Covid-19 vaccines provided by Americans to almost 29 million.

Even though portions of the Philippines will switch to Alert level 1 on March 1 and the number of Covid-19 cases is dropping, the pandemic should be kept in mind as people adjust to their “new normal,” according to Variava.

Undersecretary Isidro Purisima of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Security was also there when the vaccination doses arrived.

He noted that the government’s immunization program has been in place for a year and praised international partners such as the United States and the Covax facility for their assistance.

Purisima urged the public to be vaccinated once more.

“I’m urging our citizens, particularly the most vulnerable, to be vaccinated (against Covid-19). Obtain their boosters so that we may revive our economy “he stated

Before their area can be placed under Alert Level 1, the local authorities need to inoculate at least 80% of seniors.
