Antique SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA – As part of its advocacy to encourage ethical dog ownership, the Municipality of Libertad in Antique hopes to vaccinate 1,020 dogs during a week-long mass anti-rabies vaccination.

Dr. Marco Rafael Ardamil, chief of the ProVet’s Public Health Division, said in an interview on Wednesday that the vaccine, which began on March 1, is also to commemorate Rabies Awareness Month.

He stated that the Antique Provincial Veterinary (ProVet) has dispatched a team of four workers to Libertad’s local government unit (LGU).

For the immunization campaign, the LGU has ordered anti-rabies vaccinations.

“In 2020, there was one suspected human rabies death in Libertad, which is why we are celebrating Rabies Awareness Month in our town on March 4,” Ardamil added.

According to the veterinarian, there was no test confirmation of the virus, thus it was considered a suspicious case.

ProVet continues to push for proper dog ownership, despite the fact that no human deaths were reported in 2021 until the early part of this year.

“Dog owners must keep their dogs safe and provide sufficient care,” he stated.

Owners should not allow their pets to loiter, according to Ardamil.

In light of the ProVet’s small budget, he also pushed other LGUs in the province, such as the municipality of Libertad, to appropriate funding for vaccination.

“We were able to undertake mass vaccination on 8,722 dogs last year, which is a small fraction considering the province’s overall canine population of 41,033,” he said.

ProVet also does spaying and ligation in addition to vaccinations.

To manage the dog population in the province, 53 canines were castrated and two females were ligated last year.
