As the Ukraine-Russia conflict intensifies, Philippine stocks and the peso decline.

MANILA – The escalation of the Ukraine-Russia crisis resulted in the main stock index and the peso closing in the red on Monday.

To 7,288.07 points, the Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) fell 0.73 percent or 53.94 points.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.73 percent, or 28.54 points, to 3,866.98.

Industrial, 2.44 percent; Financials, 1.08 percent; Holding Firms, 0.72 percent; Services, 0.18 percent; and Property, 0.14 percent, were among the sectoral indices that concluded the day in the red.

Only Mining and Oil saw a 6.54 percent increase over the day.

A total of 2.35 billion shares worth PHP8.73 billion were traded.

At 147 to 66, decliners outnumbered advancers, with 34 shares remaining unchanged.

“Philippine stocks fell as the Russia-Ukraine crisis prompted nuclear fears,” Regina Capital Development Corporation (RCDC) head of sales Luis Limlingan remarked.

Reports concerning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to Limlingan, have eclipsed favorable US job numbers.

The US announced last week that it added 678,000 jobs in February and that the unemployment rate fell to 3.8 percent from 4 percent.

Meanwhile, the peso fell to 52.18 pesos from 51.74 pesos on Friday.

It started the day at 51.9, down from 51.65 at the start of the previous session.

It traded in a range of 52.19 to 51.85, resulting in a 52.061 average.

The volume reached USD1.58 billion, substantially doubling the USD793.22 million recorded the previous Friday.
