HK assists PH in warning companies about the dangers of terminating Covid-affected employees.

MANILA – The government of Hong Kong (HK) has joined the Philippine government in warning employers in the host territory that firing an employee who has been infected with the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) is a violation of their labor regulations.

Labor According to Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO)-HK Attaché Melchor Dizon, there have only been three incidents of termination involving Filipino workers so far, but the employers were persuaded to reconsider their judgments in these circumstances.

“In response to reports of Covid-19-related terminations, the Hong Kong Government has made an official statement to the Philippine Consulate General stating that they will aid in assisting there, as well as monitor and supply.” “They warn businesses that if a person has Covid, it is against the employment ordinance to fire them,” Dizon said in a Laging Handa briefing.

At the same time, Dizon stated that the virus has infected 221 OFWs in the Philippines.

“Of the total, 43 have made a full recovery.” Another 95 are with their employers because their policy is that if you test positive, you will be subjected to mandatory testing. If you test positive, you will receive a text message telling you to stay at home and wait for the Center for Health Protection to call, after which they will pick you up and transport you to quarantine facilities. “There are 95 of them in the employer’s house,” he claimed.

Meanwhile, 22 people are in government quarantine facilities, another 22 people are in non-government organization isolation facilities, 23 people are in boarding houses waiting for the Center for Health Protection to call, six people are in hotel quarantine facilities, and eight people are in hospitals.

He also stated that travel to Hong Kong is prohibited from the Philippines, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Nepal, Pakistan, Australia, and France.

The ban on inbound planes from these nations has been extended until April 20, according to Dizon.

He went on to say that the number of instances had risen from zero in January to more than 100 in February, and that it had risen from 10,000 to 20,000 in March.

“As of March 1, there were 32,000 cases. Unfortunately, 55,000 cases were reported yesterday (Wednesday),” Dizon said.

The government continues to provide financial assistance to affected OFWs, according to the labor official.

“Aside from food packs, we also provide them with power banks for their mobile phones so that they can communicate with their loved ones in the Philippines,” he explained. “After they have recovered, they are eligible for the $200 aftercare financial assistance from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.”

Over 220,000 OFWs work and live in the host territory, with home service workers accounting for 90% of the total.
