MANILA, Philippines — Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo, national director of Caritas Philippines, advised voters to pray for all candidates running in the upcoming national and local elections on May 9.

He’s also praying for politicians to continue to uphold God’s law and for the Filipino people’s good.

“May the Lord bless us all as we prepare for the election on May 9th.” May the Lord guide and enlighten all of our candidates, reminding them that the most important thing they can do is defend God’s rules. In an interview with Church-run Radio Veritas, the Kidapawan cardinal added, “May the Lord accompany all our voters so that they may select and choose our leaders with compassion for others, for the poor, and for all those on the outskirts of society.”

He also urged that everyone pray for the candidates’ strength and health, as well as their clarity of mind as they seek election as national and local leaders.

“May all of our candidates be blessed with good health so that they can continue campaigning, and may our approaching elections be free of violence,” Bagaforo stated.

Bagaforo also urged people to exercise caution when electing new leaders in the country, urging them to put the country’s interests ahead of their own.

The head of Caritas Philippines also urged the candidates to include environmental protection and the restoration of order in their platforms, which have been harmed by mining firms.

In the May 9, 2022 national and local elections, there will be a total of 18,180 elected positions, including one seat for president, one seat for vice president, 12 senators, and 63 seats for party-list members.

253 district representatives, 81 governors and vice governors, 782 provincial board members, 146 city mayors and city vice mayors, 1,650 city councilors; 1,488 municipal mayors and municipal vice mayors; and 11,908 municipal councilors are among the candidates for local positions.
