Officials from Zambo City urge action to protect wetlands.

The public has been invited to assist the government in protecting the wetlands in their areas by the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR) in this city.
Engr. Reynaldo Gonzales, director of OCENR, emphasized on Thursday how crucial it is to protect the wetlands in order to meet the nation’s 2030 sustainable development targets.
“Wetlands are indispensable for the various advantages or ecosystem services that they provide humanity, ranging from freshwater supply, food and building materials, and biodiversity to flood management, groundwater recharge, and climate change mitigation,” Gonzales stressed.
In honor of World Wetlands Day, 2,500 mangrove propagules were planted by Gonzales and Mayor John Dalipe on Thursday at the coastal area in Sitio Logoy Diutay, Barangay Talon-Talon.
The campaign included participation from numerous agencies, business organizations, non-governmental organizations, and the education sector.
Let’s keep up the protection of the environment and our efforts to improve it, Dalipe remarked.
The program, which was centered around the subject “It’s time for wetland restoration,” emphasized the pressing need to give wetlands restoration top priority and exhorts all generations to take action to revitalize and restore degraded wetlands.
Every February 2, World Wetlands Day is observed to commemorate the day the Convention on Wetlands was ratified in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971.
Also on Thursday, the mayor dispatched staff from the City Engineer’s Office to the San Roque River to conduct cleanup and dredging operations where accumulated trash and debris block water flow and flood the city’s airport runway during torrential downpours.
The goal of the river dredging project is to avoid property damage and airport operations disturbance.
