MANILA, Philippines — To speed up the country’s transition to electric vehicles, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has recommended eliminating import duties on electric vehicles.

According to DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez, lowering the tax on e-vehicles will lower the cost of this method of transportation, encouraging more people to use them instead of fuel-powered vehicles.

“In order to saturate the market with e-vehicles, we recommended lowering the tariff rate from 30% to zero,” he added in a mix of Filipino and English.

E-vehicles from Asean are already duty-free, whereas most favored nations are subjected to a 30% levy.

Lopez noted that the policy’s effects may not be realized until the second part of the year, but it will aid in reducing the country’s oil use, which is erratic.

E-vehicles, according to the trade director, will not only reduce local oil consumption but also help to reduce carbon emissions.

While accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles, Lopez believes that the same amount of work should be put into installing charging stations across the country.
