Quiapo Church will be closed for disinfection till January 6th.
Starting Monday, the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, often known as Quiapo Church, will be closed for three days for extensive disinfection.
The basilica will not receive worshippers from January 3 to 6 to allow for cleaning procedures in support of attempts to limit the spread of the coronavirus sickness 2019, according to parish vicar Fr. Douglas Badong (Covid-19).
Masses will continue to be broadcast on the internet.
“The leadership of Quiapo Church, led by Msgr. (Hernando) Coronel thought that the Quiapo church would be temporarily closed owing to the news of the unexpected spike of Covid cases in Manila,” Badong said in a video message broadcast on social media.
“This is the church’s cooperation in preventing Covid infection and allowing for the cleansing and disinfection of the church and its surrounds in preparation for this significant day for our devotees,” he added.
Devotees are welcome to return on January 7, two days before the feast of the Black Nazarene.
“As part of the precautionary steps that we must take, we will do the required preparations and cleaning up so that by January 7, when it reopens, the church will be safer for those who attend church here, especially for the coming feast of the Black Nazarene on January 9,” Badong added.
He also recommended people get vaccinated against Covid-19 or receive booster and additional doses.
The church of Pope Pius XII is also closed.
Meanwhile, the Pope Pius XII Catholic Center’s Sta. Maria Goretti Parish Church and office on United Nations Avenue in Paco, Manila, will be shuttered until January 15 after two of its employees tested positive for the Covid-19 virus.
The parish priest, Fr. David Concepcion, said in a statement that full cleaning and extensive sanitation will be carried out.
Masses will be aired live online at 7 a.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sundays.
