Following successful ‘dynamic testing,’ the MRT plans to build a four-car train.

MANILA, Philippines โ€” The Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) plans to increase its existing three-car train operation to four-car trains, doubling the train’s passenger capacity.

The MRT-3 claimed in a Facebook post on Friday that “dynamic testing” for a four-car train on its mainline was conducted on Wednesday and was intended to check the train’s running safety, travel comfort, and derailment stability, among other things.

Most MRT-3 train cars can carry 394 passengers, or 1,182 passengers in a three-car system or 1,576 passengers in a four-car setup, with the National Capital Region (NCR) on Alert Level 1, which allows for 100 percent passenger capacity.

While the MRT-3 train stations were built to support four-car trains, the “pocket track” โ€” where trains park off the mainline โ€” was determined to be insufficiently long to allow four-car trains prior to the MRT-3’s public debut in 2000, according to the company.

“One of the recommended improvements to allow for the safe operation of 4-car trainsets is to redesign the track on the north side of the mainline,” the MRT-3 noted.

MRT-3 Director of Operations Michael Capati stated that after the MRT-3’s renovation is completed in December 2021, an increase in train carriages will be possible.

“With 4-car train sets, we can expand our line capacity even further, allowing us to serve a larger riding public with a safe and dependable transportation system while the country adjusts to the new normal,” Capati stated.
