Limited resumption Palace briefings on a one-on-one basis are recommended.

MANILA, Philippines — Acting presidential spokesperson Martin Andanar stated on Monday that a recommendation has been made to resume restricted face-to-face news briefings with Palace beat reporters at Malacanang Palace’s New Executive Building (NEB).

Following Health Secretary Francisco Duque III’s announcement that the government’s pandemic managers would be discussing guidelines for a possible “alert level zero” amid a continued decline in Covid-19 infections in the country, the government’s pandemic managers will be discussing guidelines for a possible “alert level zero.”

“Mayroong ipinasa sa akin na suggestion, but it’s restricted… In an interview with DZRH, Andanar remarked, “I received a suggestion, but only a restricted number of reporters may be permitted inside.”

He underlined the importance of exercising extreme caution in order to avoid exposure to Covid-19 and infection.

“Kailangang maging maingat pa rin tayo, kailangang maging maingat pa rin tayo, kailangang maging main (We should still be cautious.) Mainam na iyong okay, safe tayo kaysa tayo naman ay magkasakit pa. It’s better to be safe than sorry),” he continued.

Prior to the Covid-19 epidemic, accredited members of the Malacanang News Corps (MPC), an independent body of journalists who cover the President and Malacanang activities on a regular basis, used to attend press briefings at the NEB.

The MPC works out of the NEB’s press office in Malacanang.

As part of its measures to limit the spread of Covid-19 within the Palace, Malacanang has temporarily banned in-person news briefings at the NEB.

Level 0 of the alert system

Meanwhile, Andanar expressed hope that alert level zero would be implemented in some areas of the country.

He said, “Lahat naman may pag-asa (There is always hope).”

Covid-19 must be deemed endemic or handled as a common sickness, according to Interior Undersecretary Epimaco Densing III, in order for alert level zero to be enforced in the country.

In his next Talk to the People address on Tuesday, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte is scheduled to make an announcement about probably increased alert levels, he added.

For the first half of March, Metro Manila and 39 other locations across the country have been placed on Alert Level 1.

Under Alert Level 1, people of all ages and comorbidities are free to walk around, but they must avoid crowded and enclosed locations, as well as close contact settings. Private businesses and government agencies are also permitted to function at full capacity on-site, subject to certain public health requirements.
