Manila will negotiate with SpaceX to obtain a faster internet connection.

MANILA, Philippines – The Manila city government intends to acquire a low-orbit Starlink satellite from SpaceX Enterprise, which will provide high-speed broadband services to Manilenos, particularly public school students.

The Manila City Council authorized Mayor and Aksyon Demokratiko standard-bearer Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso on Thursday to “negotiate and enter into a contract with SpaceX Enterprise for the use of Starlink, the world’s most advanced broadband internet system, in the city of Manila” via Resolution 46.

Domagoso confirmed the resolution’s passage during a press conference held during Aksyon Demokratiko’s campaign sortie in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

“I was informed by the Manila City Council that it has passed a resolution authorizing me, as mayor, to negotiate with SpaceX Enterprise Group, which is Elon Musk’s Starlink company’s marketing arm,” he said.

According to Domagoso, public school students in Manila will benefit significantly from Starlink’s advanced broadband internet system.

It is well-known that internet connectivity has been one of the most significant challenges faced by students and teachers taking online classes, as well as employees working from home, as a result of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic restrictions.

“Wala ng dead spots, wala ng mabagal na signal o (There will be no dead spots, there will be no slow internet speed, and) there will be no signal that interferes with students’ online learning process,” he said.

In its resolution, the Manila City Council noted that Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX, is an American aerospace manufacturer founded by Elon Musk that operates more than 1,700 Starlink satellites in orbit.

“While the majority of satellite internet services today are provided by a single geostationary satellite orbiting the planet at approximately 35,000 kilometers, Starlink is a constellation of multiple satellites orbiting the planet at approximately 550 kilometers and covering the entire globe,” the resolution stated.

Domagoso added that the city of Manila will greatly benefit from Starlink’s low-orbit satellite services for disaster preparedness and response to natural disasters and calamities.

“I’m hoping we can make use of the Starlink low-orbit satellite as soon as possible. The best success story occurred in Ukraine, where Elon Musk deployed a number of satellites following the destruction of the country’s internet connectivity by Russian forces. It’s making headlines. Hopefully, with the help of God, we will be able to use Starlink nationwide in the event that I am elected president in May,” Domagoso said.
