As the campaign kicks off on Friday, local bettors are asked to follow protocol.

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has reaffirmed its demand for candidates to adhere to campaign etiquette when holding rallies, assemblies, and other political events.

In a statement issued Monday night, PNP chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos stated, “They should make sure that (there is) sufficient cooperation with authorities concerned to assist them in the security and crowd control.”

Carlos made the comment ahead of the commencement of the local candidate campaign session on Friday.

Despite the Commission on Elections’ recent relaxation of in-person campaign requirements, he cautioned organizers not to become complacent (Comelec).

“Please do not bring large sums of money, jewels, valuable stuff, or tiny children,” Carlos advised.

Last Monday, the election body repealed the rule requiring rally organizers to acquire permission from the election body’s campaign committee before staging rallies in locations with Alert Levels 1 and 2.

For Alert Level 1 and 2 locations, campaign activities have been approved at 100% capacity and 70% capacity, respectively.

Previously, campaign operations in areas under Alert Level 1 were limited to 70 percent capacity, while campaign activities in areas under Alert Level 2 were limited to 50 percent capacity.

Despite the eased campaign guidelines, handshakes, kissing, and taking pictures are still prohibited due to the coronavirus epidemic.

From March 14 to March 20, the Department of Health (DOH) recorded 3,572 new coronavirus cases.

As the situation unfolded, the PNP head stated that they had already identified a number of hotspots, notably in Mindanao, that will be included in their regions of concern for the May 9 election.

Carlos says he recently traveled to Butuan, Caraga, and Soccsksargen.

He added that as soon as they arrived in the Caraga Region, they attended a conference with the Philippine Armed Forces, where they identified seven hotspots.

“We are being evaluated on a regular basis. We’ll meet again on April 4 to see if the situation has improved or deteriorated, so we can take more tangible steps, such as deploying extra police personnel “he stated

When asked if they were monitoring any private armed organizations, Carlos replied they had identified a few in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and Soccskargen.

“There are some preliminary efforts that can be taken to remedy this. Armed groups have been identified. We’ll talk to the candidates to make sure they won’t or aren’t using them, because if they are, they’ll be charged “he stated

Carlos stated that they will also keep an eye on the situation in the Samar regions to ensure that communist insurgents do not cause any issue there.

According to the PNP commander, he will meet with regional directors in Bicol next.
