Over 8 million PhilID cards have been distributed throughout the country.

MANILA, Philippines โ€“ The Philippine Postal Corporation has so far distributed 8,176,454 Philippine Identification (PhilID) cards, also known as national identification cards, throughout the country.

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) confirmed that it is expanding its registration operations for the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) “in order to provide PhilID cards to a greater number of holders.”

PSA Assistant Secretary Rosalinda Bautista stated that the delivered PhilID cards accounted for 24.2% of the 33.8 million cards targeted for this year.

“We, at PSA, are working closely with the Philippine Postal Corporation and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) to accommodate the millions of Filipinos who have successfully registered for PhilSys Step 1 and Step 2,” she said in a statement on Tuesday.

The BSP is PhilSys’s official printer.

Bautista urged PhilID holders to avoid sharing their encrypted personal information online.

The PhilID is accompanied by a letter that contains the PhilSys Number.

Over 50 million Filipinos have successfully completed the Step 2 biometrics procedure, which includes fingerprinting, iris scanning, and photographing.

Additionally, a digital version of the PhilID is being developed to facilitate online transactions.

Republic Act 11055, or the PhilSys Act, was signed into law by President Rodrigo Duterte in August 2018. It aims to establish a single national ID for all Filipinos and resident aliens.

The national ID shall be a valid form of identification that serves as a means of streamlining public and private transactions, school enrollment, and bank account opening.

Additionally, it will increase efficiency, particularly when dealing with government services, where individuals will only be required to present their PhilID during transactions.
