MANILA, Philippines – The Department of National Defense (DND) stated that the next step in its modernization program is to improve personnel capability in handling and operating weapon platforms and systems acquired for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

“The next phase of our modernization is to strengthen our people’s capacity to operate the new technologies that we are acquiring,” Lorenzana said Tuesday afternoon during the Philippine Army’s (PA) 125th anniversary celebration in Fort Bonifacio.

Lorenzana stated that the country cannot simply acquire modern and state-of-the-art equipment without also investing in training the personnel who will operate it.

Among the newly acquired equipment for the PA on display during its founding anniversary was a 155mm autonomous truck-mounted howitzer system (ATMOS) and an armored mortar carrier armed with 120mm mounted mortar systems.

Lorenzana also expressed gratitude to the officers and enlisted personnel of the Philippine Army for their support, with less than three months remaining until President Rodrigo Duterte’s term expires.

“Given that this is my final anniversary with you as Defense Secretary, allow me to express my gratitude to the entire service, particularly our troops on the ground, for their selfless and tireless service over the last five and a half years. Without your unwavering support, my term would not have been productive or successful “he continued.
