Duterte’s birthday wish: Elections that are free, fair, and transparent
MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Roa Duterte wishes for “clean, fair, and honest” elections on May 9 as he celebrates his 77th birthday on Monday (March 28).
“For this year’s birthday, he wishes for a clean, fair, and honest election in May 2022, as he has repeatedly emphasized the importance of a peaceful transfer of power as part of his enduring legacy,” Acting Presidential Spokesperson Martin Andanar said in a press statement.
On Dec. 10, 2021, during the US-led Summit for Democracy, Duterte stated that it would be “his highest honor” to hand over power to his successor knowing that he did his best to serve the Filipino people.
Duterte announced last month that he had begun packing his belongings in Malacanang and was looking forward to handing over the country’s leadership to his successor in June.
Over 65 million Filipinos are expected to vote on May 9 to determine the fate of national and local candidates. This will be the first election to be held in the event of a pandemic.
Meanwhile, Andanar wished Duterte both mental and physical health.
“Our prayer to the Almighty is that he will continue to grant the President good physical and mental health in the years to come so that he can continue serving the Filipino people’s interests and improving their lives,” he said.
He expressed gratitude to Duterte for his “bold and decisive leadership” and “genuine compassion” for all Filipinos, noting that these characteristics have resulted in “positive and meaningful change” for Filipinos.
Andanar stated that Duterte will commemorate his final birthday as president in the same manner as he did on his first birthday as chief executive.
“President Duterte will commemorate the occasion with a simple and quiet celebration in Davao City, as is customary in his family,” he said.
Except for his 75th birthday, Duterte has always celebrated his birthday with family in Davao City.
Duterte was unable to fly to his hometown on March 28, 2020, due to a Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine imposed to contain the pandemic’s spread.
Duterte was born on March 28, 1945, in Maasin, Southern Leyte.
Duterte became the oldest person ever elected to the Philippine presidency in 2016 at the age of 71.
