Taal Volcano remains on Level 3 Alert.
MANILA – Taal Volcano remains at Alert Level 3 (magmatic unrest) following Saturday’s phreatomagmatic eruption of the main crater and subsequent twin phreatomagmatic events early Sunday morning.
Seismic records and visual cameras from the Taal Volcano Network (TVN) captured 800- and 400-meter-tall plumes drifting southwest from the main crater.
Phreatomagmatic eruptions are the result of magma and water interacting.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology’s (Phivolcs) bulletin on Sunday morning, the TVN recorded 14 volcanic earthquakes in the last 24 hours, including ten volcanic tremor events lasting two to three minutes and four low-frequency volcanic earthquakes.
The main crater’s activity was dominated by upwelling of hot volcanic fluids from its lake, which generated 1,000-meter-high plumes that drifted southwest.
On Friday, sulfur dioxide emissions averaged 6,957 tonnes per day.
Residents of Taal Volcano Island and high-risk villages such as Bilibinwang and Banyaga, Agoncillo and Boso-boso, Gulod and eastern Bugaan East, Laurel, Batangas began evacuating on Saturday due to the potential dangers of pyroclastic density currents and volcanic tsunami if subsequent stronger eruptions occur.
As of Saturday afternoon, 1,689 residents of Agoncillo had already evacuated their homes.
They are dispersed among nine schools located within and around the municipality, while another five remain in another village that is not yet required to evacuate.
