Marcos wants to show his support for fishermen in a big way.

MANILA, Philippines โ€” Under the administration of presidential frontrunner Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos, the fishery sector will receive a much-needed boost, with Marcos promising to improve the lives of fishermen by modernizing their fishing vessels and providing them with the necessary equipment to ensure a higher catch and a safer voyage at sea.

During a recent presidential interview with SMNI’s “Deep Probe,” Marcos stated that the government must address the requirements of fishermen because the majority of them are still stuck with their outdated boats, many of which have seen better days.

“If we can ayusin lang natin ang ating kinukuhanan ng isda, we have a lot of potential in our fisheries. Number one, ang ating mangingisda ng mas malaking bangka bigyan natin. If we merely address our catch of fish, maliliit lang yung bangka nila. First and foremost, let us provide larger boats to our fishermen. Their boats are small, and they already have to travel 12 kilometers because the loob has been overfished (due to overfishing near the beaches) “he stated

Local fishermen, according to Marcos, must be protected and certain of receiving all of the seafood they require without the intrusion of other nations.

“Of course, patrols kasi maraming nagpo-poach sa atin (increase patrols because there are a lot of poachers here),” he explained.

Following the government’s prior statement that the country will begin importing galunggong (round scad) from foreign countries, Marcos emphasized the need to expand the fishing industry.

“There are other things that need to be done as well; the fact that we’re importing galunggong has been well-publicized, and it’s evident that we’ve gotten ourselves into this predicament by accident. But, once again, it stems from a lack of attention in the agriculture and fisheries sectors “he stated

Fishermen, like farmers, need to have all of the latest and best techniques and technologies, according to Marcos, who works in the agriculture sector.

During the SMNI discussion last month, Marcos also revealed his foreign policy on how he plans to handle the territorial issue in the West Philippine Sea, which has prevented Filipino fishermen from returning to the waters where they have fished for over a century.
