The Department of Education wants to create medium-rise schools that are disaster-resistant.

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) has finally unveiled an exhibit of medium- and high-rise school building ideas for learners, aiming at addressing climate change and population influx, in response to the country’s long-debated problem of classroom shortage.

DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones stated in a Facebook Livestream on Tuesday that she is ecstatic that these safe spaces are being considered for children, especially because they prepare students for the new normal.

“As our tenure draws to a close, we publicly accept that we do require medium-rise school buildings in order to save space. We are not going to abandon blended learning. “In these types of buildings, in these kinds of school spaces, blended learning will take place,” she remarked.

Briones emphasized that students become accustomed to an education system that is mainly online and “technology-based.”

The Department of Education displayed five- to 12-story academic buildings that were built to be disaster-resistant at the event.

Each of its classrooms can accommodate 25 to 60 students, and it also includes concession spaces, clinics, a portico, and a covered roof deck, among other amenities.

Its design incorporates flood mitigation, typhoon, and earthquake resistance measures, as well as green construction technology. It also involves the use of renewable energy, natural lighting, and ventilation design, all of which are organized to ensure water efficiency in the new standard configuration.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), which has been collaborating closely with the DepEd, has also expressed its joy with the launch, saying it will assist address the “perennial challenge” created by rising population and delayed funding releases.

The DPWH Secretary, Roger Mercado, then promised to support the DepEd in its goal of providing suitable learning spaces.
