Lacson rejects growing calls to abandon his presidential campaign.
MANILA, Philippines — Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, an independent presidential contender, said on Thursday that he will not withdraw from the May 9 elections.
This came after Buhay Party-list Rep. Lito Atienza urged for his withdrawal from the election so that a stronger duo could be fielded against poll frontrunners Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his running companion, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte.
“I’m going to finish this race for the nth time, and I’m not going to quit. I reject Rep. Jose ‘Lito’ Atienza’s plea for me to get out of the presidential contest “In a statement sent to reporters, he stated.
Atienza previously stated that he is considering withdrawing from the vice presidential contest and that he would prefer Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III to run alongside Senator Manny Pacquiao to present a stronger challenge to the frontrunners.
Lacson also labeled Atienza’s declaration a snub.
“To say the least, what he did was uncalled for — kabastusan (rudeness). He should return to school and learn the Good Manners and Right Conduct Act, which I helped write “Added him.
Lacson also reaffirmed his plea for Filipinos to reject “survey politics” in favor of electing a leader who is the most qualified and capable, rather than one who is dictated by polls.
“Rather than thinking we’ll spend our votes on individuals who are talented but not leading in the polls,” Lacson added, “we should remember that it’ll be a bigger waste if we choose the incorrect leader who turns out to be less competent.”
