MANILA, Philippines — On Wednesday, the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) served a total of 293,290 people, setting a new single-day record when the rail service reopened on June 1, 2020, amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The MRT-3 credited the increase in passengers to the current “Libreng Sakay” (free ride) program and the increased number of running trains following its renovation under the Duterte administration, according to a Facebook post.

The MRT-3 carried between 250,000 and 300,000 passengers per day before the pandemic.

It reported that during rush hour, the MRT-3 has roughly 18 three-car train sets and two four-car train sets running, with the number of running trains ranging from 18 to 21 train sets at any given moment.

“Ang four-car CKD train set ay tumatakbo tuwing morning peak hours mula 7 a.m. hanggang 9 a.m. and afternoon peak hours mula 5 p.m. hanggang 7 p.m. (The four-car CKD train set and the Dalian train set operate during morning peak hours from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., and afternoon peak hours from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., respectively),” according to the MRT-3.

In addition, MRT-3 trains have been running at 60 km/hr since December 2020, cutting the average wait time between trains to 3.5 to 4 minutes, down from 8.5 to 9 minutes previously.

The MRT-3 reminded passengers that, with the National Capital Region and the rest of the country on Alert Level 1, some basic public health and safety protocols remain in places, such as no eating, no talking, and the mandatory use of face masks inside its trains.

From March 28 to April 30, the rail service will be free of charge to all passengers during all operating hours to commemorate the completion of the MRT-3’s rehabilitation and to ease the burden on commuters in the face of rising fuel prices.
