MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced on Thursday that 300 locations around the country may be designated as areas of concern in the run-up to the May 9 elections.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) have suggested that the locations be recognized as areas of concern, according to Commissioner George Garcia.

“As of today, we have received recommendations.” “However, there has yet to be a Comelec resolution publicly designating these areas of concern,” he said in a press conference in Manila on Thursday.

After Comelec Chairman Saidamen Pangarungan asked their team to conduct a final check of the locations, Garcia stated that no decision has been made to declare the areas as areas of concern.

“The Chairman felt it was important to order a verification from our own field staff, not from the AFP or PNP,” he explained. “The assessment will have to be modified every day.” The PNP and AFP are both recommendations, but we will make our own ultimate decision.”

The Comelec previously categorized locations as yellow (areas of worry), orange (areas of imminent concern), red (areas of extreme concern), and under Comelec control in past elections.
