NATO celebrates its 73rd anniversary at a critical juncture in Europe’s security.

BRUSSELS, BELGIAN REPUBLICAN REPUBLICAN REPU With the effect of the Russia-Ukraine war, which is described as “the biggest threat Europe has faced since the Cold War” and “the greatest destruction since the Second World War,” the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) plays a more critical role in the continent’s security in its 73rd year of existence.

NATO was formed as a political and military alliance with the goal of reorganizing Western Europe’s security following World War II.

NATO draws members from both sides of the Atlantic together around common principles such as democracy and the rule of law. Its fundamental objective is to preserve and defend the security of its partners.

Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which establishes a collective defense commitment, is the most crucial aspect of this cooperation. This article mandates NATO to defend its members in the event of an attack or threat of attack, as well as to take action in the event that an assault on one member has resulted in an attack on all NATO members.

Expansions

NATO, which has an open-door policy and admits all “European” countries that meet the criteria, grew from 12 members in 1949 to 30 members in 73 years.

Greece joined NATO in 1952, after the United States of America, Belgium, England, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Iceland, Canada, Luxembourg, Norway, and Portugal signed the treaty.

Germany became a member of NATO in 1955, Spain in 1982, and the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland in 1999.

Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia joined the alliance in 2004; Albania and Croatia joined in 2009, Montenegro in 2017, and North Macedonia in 2020.

Functioning

Brussels, Belgium’s capital, is home to NATO’s primary headquarters. The Alliance’s decisions are made “unanimously” by the Alliance’s 29 members here.

At various levels, allies gather to confer on security matters.

Each country has a permanent representation at the main headquarters, which is led by an ambassador. The Ambassador represents his country’s interests in NATO, participates in consultations, and plays a vital role in decision-making.

The role of the Transatlantic Forum

The foreign ministers of the member states meet twice a year at the main headquarters, and the defense ministers four times a year.

Every two years, NATO leaders gather at a summit hosted by one of the member countries.

While it serves as a transatlantic forum for its members to communicate and act cooperatively on security problems of mutual concern, this consultation takes place at the highest level of leaders’ summits.

Summits of extraordinary importance are becoming more common.

So far, there have been 31 summits, with the past two being particularly noteworthy.

The goal of the extraordinary summits, which took place via video conference on February 25 and in-person on March 24 at NATO’s main headquarters in Brussels, was to review the situation following Russia’s attack on Ukraine as well as NATO’s long-term posture in Eastern Europe.

While the war was hailed as “the greatest threat Europe has faced since the Cold War” and “the greatest carnage it has witnessed since the Second World War,” the Allies also opted to assist Ukraine after agreeing to strengthen military presence on the eastern flank at two extraordinary summits.

NATO has intensified its military build-up in nations on its eastern flank, including Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Slovakia, since November 2021, when Russia’s military mobility on the Ukrainian border began to increase.

On June 29 and 30, the next regular summit will be placed in Madrid.
