The ‘Balikatan’ forces have completed a two-day house-clearing exercise.

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Army (PA) stated on Tuesday that one of its platoons took part in a two-day room-clearing combined interoperability exercise (COIE) with their counterparts from the United States Army Pacific (USARPAC) in Fort Magsaysay, Nueva Ecija, from April 3 to 4.

In a statement, Army spokeswoman Col. Xerxes Trinidad said, “The room-clearing drill is part of a series of CIOEs that would culminate in the military operations in urban terrain/airfield seizure joint interoperability exercise (JIOE) in Fort Magsaysay, Nueva Ecija.”

He went on to say that men from the 92nd Infantry Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division trained with their USARPAC counterparts on how to attack and clear an airfield, which included isolating the target and dampening the threat.

The assault element was advanced, the building was assaulted, the building was cleared, and the force was consolidated and reorganized during this training.

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) claimed its personnel trained alongside US Air Force units on mass casualty exercise (MASCAL) and other comparable scenarios from March 28 to 31 as part of the “Balikatan” exercises.

This subject matter expert exchange (SMEE) took place at Clark Air Base, Pampanga, and is part of the continuing “Balikatan” exercises, according to Air Force spokesperson Col. Maynard Mariano.

During MASCAL, the PAF and PACAF (Pacific Air Forces) exchanged dialogue about their best practices, knowledge, and skills with the goal of improving aeromedical evacuation or patient movement capabilities, civilian-military interoperability, and critical care air transport.

PAF officials from the Office of the Chief Surgeon Air Force, Office of the Chief Nurse Air Force, 505th Search-and-Rescue Group, Aeromedical technicians, and Medical Admin Corps officers were present through video teleconferencing and face-to-face during the SMEE, according to Mariano.

During the occasion, he claimed, Covid-19 safety and health protocols were observed.

The annual joint and combined exercise “Balikatan,” which means “shoulder-to-shoulder” or “shouldering the load together,” is hosted by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the US Indo-Pacific Command to improve bilateral interoperability, capabilities, trust, and cooperation built over decades of shared experiences.

This year’s “Balikatan” will see some 8,900 Filipino and American soldiers take part.

The yearly bilateral exercises, held by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the US Armed Forces Indo-Pacific Command, aim to improve interoperability while also boosting capabilities, confidence, and collaboration gained over decades of shared experiences.
