MANILA, Philippines — Following the formation of a task force to examine vote-buying, at least two complaints have been lodged with the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Commissioner George Erwin Garcia identified the complaint brought by the Koalisyon Novalenyo Kontra Korapsyon and the Alyansa ng mga Mamamayan ng Bagbag against Rose Lin, who is vying for the fifth district of Quezon City, in a message to the media on Tuesday.

More allegations against vote-buying could be filed in the following days, according to Garcia.

“These first cases are the start of everything.” This is a warning to all that we have a fully awakened populace with the highest level of maturity. “However, the presumption of innocent, as stipulated by the Constitution, should never be jeopardized,” he stated.

The Comelec, Department of Justice (DOJ), Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission, Department of the Interior and Local Government, Philippine Information Agency, National Bureau of Investigation, Philippine National Police, and Armed Forces of the Philippines make up the inter-agency “Task Force Kontra Bigay.”

Commissioner Aimee Ferolino is in charge of the task force.

The Department of Justice has backed the Comelec’s planned assault on election-related fake news.

On Tuesday, Department of Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra stated that their law enforcement agencies will support the election body, but that they had not yet received a request for assistance.

“(The Comelec) hasn’t done so yet” (requested DOJ assistance). However, as in Comelec’s anti-vote-buying program, the DOJ is willing to assist Comelec. After all, spreading false information that affects the public interest or public order is a crime that comes clearly within the DOJ/NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) mission,” Guevarra wrote in a text message.
