MANILA, Philippines — The US Peace Corps just completed a week-long orientation program for American volunteers who will give virtual technical help to three Filipino partners in the coming six months.

As part of the US Peace Corps’ innovative Virtual Service Program, which was introduced in response to the pandemic, these American volunteers previously lived and worked in the Philippines as Peace Corps volunteers and are “returning” to the country virtually to support Filipino host organizations with priority projects.

The local government of Ivisan in Capiz, the Bataan Peninsula State University, and the Philippine Science High School are the three Filipino partners.

The American volunteers who will be working with them will focus on environmental program sustainability, agro- and ecotourism program development, and information and communication technologies.

“The US Peace Corps is pleased to assist partners in meeting their priority technical assistance needs here in the Philippines,” US Peace Corps Philippines Country Director Jenner Edelman said. “We plan to continue this unique, highly demanded program even after the pandemic is fully behind us and we have volunteers here in person early next year.”

Former American Peace Corps volunteers have participated in asking partner organizations through virtual service for the second time in the last year, including with new Peace Corps partners.

The volunteers are private citizens who volunteer five to 15 hours per week and share their professional skills with their Filipino counterparts.

Former US President John F. Kennedy established the US Peace Corps in 1961 as the government’s flagship voluntary service organization.

Since then, over 240,000 Americans have volunteered in over 140 countries throughout the world, including over 9,300 in the Philippines.
