MANILA, Philippines — The administration is eager to improve the country’s poor daily immunization output, notably in Muslim Mindanao’s Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (BARMM).

National Task Force (NTF) against Covid-19 implementer Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. said that BARMM has the lowest vaccination output among 17 regions in the country, with only 25% of its target population fully vaccinated, during President Rodrigo Duterte’s prerecorded Talk to the People aired late Tuesday night.

Galvez stated the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Department of Health (DOH) have both expressed concern about a likely increase in Covid-19 cases in BARMM as Ramadhan approaches.

“So ang nakikita namin talaga nagkakaroon po tayo ng demand issue at saka po ‘yung mga vaccination preference,” he said.

Some Muslims, according to Galvez, are refusing to be vaccinated because they believe the Covid-19 vaccines violate their religious and cultural beliefs.

“Sabi kasi ng iba na ‘yung ibang mga vaccine na ginagamit po natin hindi po halal.” Some argue the vaccines we’re using aren’t halal, therefore Iyon po ang ano po nila paniniwala po nila. That’s what they thought),” he explained.

The immunization phase in BARMM is also affected by geographical areas, he noted.

For example, each time the vaccination team travels to the remote districts of Tawi-Tawi and Basilan to inoculate residents in the affected areas, it will take six to seven hours of travel time.

The government, according to Galvez, is pushing for a “strategic focus on vaccinating the majority of BARMM people.”

To far, 66,230,305 Filipinos have received two major series of Covid-19 vaccines, with 12,208,931 eligible vaccinees receiving booster doses or further protection against the disease.
