Close malls and large businesses on May 9 to ensure power supply: solon

MANILA, Philippines — Senator Sherwin Gatchalian urged on Tuesday that some shopping malls and other businesses that use a lot of electricity be shut down to ensure that there is enough power for the May 9 elections.

Gatchalian stressed the necessity of having an uninterrupted power supply to ensure peaceful and credible national and municipal elections in an interview with Radyo Pilipinas.

(There will be adequate electricity on election day because there will be no work.) It means that, as I previously stated, offices such as here [senate] would be idle, and electric usage will be minimal. “However, my recommendation is to close shopping malls and other facilities to ensure that there would be enough power,” Gatchalian stated.

The Senate committee on energy’s chairwoman, Gatchalian, stressed the need of accurately count the ballots.

We may go shopping, but our election is a mess because our votes can’t be counted, which is a worse issue.) It’s only for the worst-case situation (if there’s a threat of a power outage),” Gatchalian explained.

He stated that, based on his calculations, if all power plants are operational, there will be sufficient power supply for the May 9 elections.

The Department of Energy promised the public in January that there would be enough power for the May 9 elections.
