The Philippine consulate in New York promises that overseas voting will be conducted in a timely and orderly manner.
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Consulate General in New York said it will maintain an orderly, month-long overseas absentee voting process amid fears of disenfranchisement owing to delays in the arrival of vote-counting machines (VCM) and ballots.
The VCM, abroad ballots, and other election materials from Manila are presently in Alaska, according to a Consulate notification dated April 7. They are scheduled to arrive within the week.
“While we understand some kababayan’s worry regarding the delay in the arrival of election paraphernalia, their statement of possible disenfranchisement and our failure to disclose the aforementioned delay is unfair on our side because the delay is beyond the Consulate’s control,” it stated.
“The Consulate is working to guarantee that the Vote Counting Machines and other election materials arrive in time for all registered overseas voters to exercise their right to vote within the election term,” it added.
Consul General Elmer Cato issued a statement condemning comments that the post was part of an alleged scheme to rig the elections.
“We have nothing to hide. In so many ways, we at the (PCG) have been transparent. We’ve also tried to be as responsive as possible. This is why we announced the postponement “On Twitter, he remarked this to a member of the Filipino community.
“Nakakasama lang ng loob (It’s just upsetting) to be accused of being involved in a plot to rig the elections,” he remarked.
Ballots in the United States and Canada where abroad voting is by mail will be mailed out “at the commencement of the voting period,” according to Commission on Elections spokesperson James Jimenez.
Voting will begin one month ahead of time in the United States on April 10 and will continue until the election day on May 9.
Only the president, vice president, senators, and party-list representatives will be elected by overseas voters.
