The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has begun random inspections of transportation hubs.
MANILA, Philippines โ As part of the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) efforts to protect the safety and security of passengers during the Holy Week and summer exodus, random inspections of transportation facilities around the country have begun.
DOTr Undersecretary Mark Steven Pastor stated in a Laging Handa briefing on Monday that the country’s first and largest land terminal, the Paranaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX), is now receiving a considerable number of passengers.
“Ito ng tao po talagang dinagsa at maayos po ang sitwasyon.” May pila ngunit mabilis ang pagkilos dahil tuluy-tuloy naman po ang pagdating ng sasakyan at dinudumog nga po iyong ating libreng sakay There is a line, but it moves quickly since vehicles keep arriving and the free public utility vehicles (PUVs) are receiving an influx of people),” Pastor explained.
Private terminals, or those owned and run by public transportation companies, have also been investigated, with certain violations of government laws discovered.
“Ipinaalam po natin ito sa management ng mga private operators na ito, ganoon na rin po sa ating MMDA [Metropolitan Manila Development Authority] upang siguraduhin pong maayos ito sa pinakamabilis na panahon,” Pastor added.
Aside from terminal inspections, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, he claimed, has ordered increased monitoring of drivers and conductors under “Oplan Harabas,” which is being carried out in collaboration with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and other government agencies.
“More than 4,000 drivers na po ang na-random drug testing natin, at may 62 na po na nag positibo rito at sila po ay tinanggal na po sa mga bus or dyip na kanilang minamaneho at under investigation po sila ngayon (We have performed random drug tests to over 4,000 drivers
He also recommended people check for advisories or adverse weather alerts before leaving to prevent becoming stranded at land or seaports.
“Katulad po dito sa Eastern Visayas na may nararanasan po tayong bagyo ngayon ay pansamantala pong inihinto ang biyahe na papunta po ng Matnog Port,” Pastor remarked.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) monitored a total of 18,209 departure passengers and 15,569 inbound passengers in all ports countrywide in its latest advisory, “Oplan Biyaheng Ayos: Semana Santa 2022.”
To date, a total of 2,210 frontline PCG employees have inspected 506 vessels and 531 motor bancas across 15 districts.
