Over a dozen people are said to have died in landslides in Leyte as a result of ‘Agaton.’

MANILA, Philippines — Over a dozen people have died in Baybay, Leyte, as a result of Tropical Depression Agaton’s onslaught, largely due to landslides, according to a National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) official.

Official reports suggest that “Agaton” killed three people, left one missing, and injured two others, according to NDRRMC executive director Ricardo Jalad.

However, Jalad, citing unconfirmed Baybay reports, said that 14 people were killed and five others were missing in Baybay’s Barangay Bunga.

“However, mayroon unofficial reports na natanggap tayo diyan sa Baybay, Leyte na mayroon 14 na patay, lima ang missing, diyan sa Barangay Bunga ng Baybay, ay may 20 missing, and diyan sa Barangay Mailhi ay mayroon 11 na patay, lima (But we have received an unofficial report in Baybay, Leyte saying that there are already 14 dead and five missing there, while in Barangay Bunga, also in Baybay, there are 20 missing, in Barangay Mailhi, there are also 11 dead). Although there is only one death recorded in Barangay Kantagnos, a broad region is affected, according to unofficial reports “During a Cabinet meeting with President Rodrigo R. Duterte, Jalad remarked.

According to Jalad, many of those who died were killed by landslides induced by “Agaton,” citing reports from Baybay City Mayor Jose Carlos Cari to the Office of Civil Defense.

“Although hindi pa indicated sa situational reports na maraming patay dahil sa landslide (That was the report of the Baybay mayor to the OCD Mr. President),” he added.

Search-and-rescue and retrieval activities are still underway, according to Jalad, who is also the Civil Defense administrator. The military, police, and employees from the Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Fire, and local reaction units are all involved.

The situation in Region 8, particularly in Baybay, Leyte, is being closely monitored by the NDRRMC Operations Center.

In the same conference, Jalad stated that flash floods and flooding have occurred of 224 areas in Muslim Mindanao’s Regions 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, Caraga, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region.

The NDRRMC said in a Tuesday update that the number of households affected by “Agaton” has risen to 95,741 or 139,146 people living in 274 barangays in Muslim Mindanao’s Regions 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, Caraga, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region.

Around 117 evacuation facilities are housing 4,681 families, while the others are being helped outside or by family and friends.

The agency has confirmed two injured people in Regions 10 and 12, as well as 20 deaths in Regions 7, 8, and 11, as well as a missing person in Region 11.
