TV shows aren’t the only way to assess the level of PH education: DepEd
MANILA, Philippines โ Following the viral historical trivia game on a TV show where several teens had a hard time answering, the Department of Education (DepEd) maintained on Tuesday that the quality of learning delivery among Filipino youth should not be solely measured based on television segments or talk shows.
DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones said in a virtual press conference that while many people found the game amusing, the entire quality of education should not be judged based on that single episode.
“I agree that these contests may serve as indications, but they are also entertainment shows in which you laugh and find responses amusing because you find them foolishโฆ “It’s really risky to make conclusions from a discussion show,” Briones added.
Meanwhile, DepEd Assistant Secretary Annalyn Sevilla said that while memorization is important in learning styles, the academic community should focus more on the “why’s and how’s approach.”
“Sana ‘wag nating sukatin ang talino ng kabataan ngayon sa (We should not test today’s youth intellect) only on trivia questions because we are employing 21st century talents,” says the author. Critical thinking, communication, cooperation, and creativity are examples of 21st-century talentsโฆ “Hindi po kami sa ano, sino, at kailan, ang mga tanong ng mga guro ngayon, paano, ipaliwanag, at i-perform,” she remarked.
Sevilla advised that TV shows avoid asking standard inquiries in favor of more probing queries that would get more informed responses.
“Doon sa GomBurZa, bakit sila nagarote?” “Doon sa GomBurZa, bakit sila nagarote?” ‘Bakit naman naman naman naman naman naman n Why were they beaten up, GomBurZa? Yung mga ganyang pagtuturo po ang ginagawa natin (For the GomBurZa inquiry, why were they beaten up? Why did they become heroes in the first place? These types of questions are used in our classes). “We need to raise the bar on the questions,” she said.
Similarly, Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio stated that events depicted in the reality show do not represent the country’s educational system and that their department should not be held fully responsible.
“Yun bang mga hindi pumapasa, sila ang quality indicator, parang unfair naman kung talagang DepEd lang ang magpapaliwanag sa mga ganitong pangyayari.” “Talagang agree po ako sa sinabi ni maรกm (Briones) na, tama tanungin kami, but dapat kung bukas naman ang ating kaisipan, mag-isip tayo kasi hindi lahat ng may mali sa ating pamayanan, sa ating society ay kasalanan
(Are they failing to meet our quality standards? It seems unjust if only the Department of Education is responsible for explaining such occurrences. I agree with ma’am (Briones) that we should be investigated, but we should also be open-minded; let us consider that not all faults in our society can be blamed on the Department of Education.)
Briones informed the public that in the remaining months of the school year, they will do all possible to “catch up” or improve the curriculum and education system in the country.
Previously, a TV show’s historical trivia game went viral after teen competitors offered incorrect responses to multiple questions.
The two participants claimed that the abbreviation for the names of martyred Filipino priests Mariano Gomez, Josรฉ Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora was MaJoHa, not GomBurZa and that the Philippines’ longest bridge across a body of water, which connects Samar and Leyte, is “SLEX,” not the San Juanico Bridge.
