Defense commanders from the Philippines and the United States are meeting to strengthen the relationship.
MANILA, Philippines — On Tuesday (Philippine time), Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and his US counterpart, Lloyd J. Austin III, met at the Pentagon in Washington, DC for another bilateral meeting to strengthen the two countries relationship.
Lorenzana stated that his most recent conversation with Austin will also serve as his farewell call, as he will be leaving his position as defense chief in 72 days.
He wrote on his Facebook page Tuesday night, “At the Pentagon with US Department of Defense (DoD) Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III for another bilateral meeting to discuss ways to continue to enhance collaboration under the US-Philippines alliance.”
Lorenzana met with Austin for the third time — once in Manila and twice in Washington, DC.
The two talked about how to increase mutual defense treaty commitments, improve marine cooperation, and improve information sharing interoperability.
Austin praised Lorenzana for pushing several of the alliance’s projects, according to a statement provided by the US military department.
“I know our teams have met frequently… over the last year, and they’ve accomplished a lot to advance some of the forward-looking partnership objectives that you and I have discussed,” he said.
He went on to say that this is a testament to the US-Philippines partnership and friendship, as well as Lorenzana’s leadership.
The enormity of the joint US-Philippine Exercise Balikatan – the first since the start of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic – was cited by Austin as an illustration of the strength of the nations’ cooperation.
“Despite the epidemic, this was one of the largest exercises ever, with a new spectrum of skills being tested,” he said. “And that simply emphasizes our shared commitment to this partnership, which is unwavering.”
According to Austin, Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine demonstrates the importance of countries banding together to maintain the international, rules-based infrastructure that has served the globe well since World War II’s end.
