The conglomerate is hoping that the next administration will push for more PPP contracts.
MANILA, Philippines — One of the country’s largest companies is hoping that the new administration would seek more public-private partnership (PPP) projects to keep crucial infrastructure construction going.
PPP, according to Aboitiz InfraCapital, a unit of Aboitiz Equity Ventures (AEV), will allow the country to continue to expand and flourish.
Infrastructure projects have a large multiplier impact, according to Aboitiz InfraCapital president and chief executive officer Cosette Canilao, thus the new administration should maintain the government’s infrastructure agenda.
Canilao, the former executive director of the PPP Center, believes that PPPs can help the government create infrastructure now that it has limited fiscal room due to rising debts accrued in recent years to pay “Build, Build, Build” projects and the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) response.
“With the government’s limited fiscal space, I believe PPP is the way to go,” she remarked.
Canilao continued. PPP infrastructure projects have a significant social impact because they provide more jobs for Filipinos.
“So I hope the new administration pursues PPP once more to further the government’s (infrastructure) plans,” she said.
AEV has set aside PHP69 billion for capital expenditures (capex) in 2022, which is 152 percent more than the company spent the previous year.
AEV’s infrastructure business would spend PHP29 billion, or 42 percent of overall capex, according to chief financial officer Manuel “Dmi” Lozano.
This is the first time the corporation would devote a significant portion of its expenditure to non-power operations.
