The election week in the Philippines is expected to be cyclone-free.
MANILA, Philippines — According to the weather bureau’s projection, the country may remain free of tropical cyclones until the May 9 elections.
While two low-pressure areas may develop or enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), weather specialist Junie Ruiz of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said there is a low chance for both LPAs to develop into tropical cyclones in a forum on Wednesday.
During the prediction period of April 27 to May 10, PAGASA expects two LPAs to develop or reach PAR, he said.
An LPA was detected 180 kilometers southeast of Zamboanga City on Wednesday afternoon, according to weather expert Ana Clauren. The Intertropical Convergence Zone runs through the LPA (ITCZ).
“This isn’t expected to become a tropical cyclone. It would only affect areas of the Visayas, Mindanao, and Bicol Regions, Romblon, and Palawan, in addition to the ITCZ. Tonight, expect mild to moderate showers, with severe rains possible in some locations “she stated
Residents in these places, according to Clauren, must take precautions against flooding and landslides.
The two projected LPAs, according to Ruiz, will be embedded along the ITCZ.
PAGASA had predicted that within a week of the elections, one LPA (LPA 1) would form somewhere over the Sulu Sea and travel towards the South China Sea. The other LPA (LPA 2) is expected to enter PAR but will not become a tropical cyclone.
“From May 4 to 10, LPA 1 is expected to recurve towards Taiwan, and LPA 2 is expected to recurve when it approaches the Philippine mainland,” Ruiz said.
Ruiz, on the other hand, stressed that the anticipated course might alter at any time.
“Because we only utilized one model to make this forecast, it is also subject to change. Weather forecasting uses a variety of models to broaden the scope of the forecast. So it’s feasible that (the presentation) we’ve shown will change in the coming days, weeks, or months “he stated
Ruiz recommended the general people to stay up to date with PAGASA’s recent forecasts.
