Duterte aspires to bring Muslims and Christians together.

MANILA – President Rodrigo R. Duterte hopes that Muslims and Christians will put their differences aside and work together to achieve peace.

Duterte urged Muslims to be less resentful of Christians who tried to steal looks at them during a speech on the 501st anniversary of the Victory of Mactan in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, on Wednesday night.

“Kayong Muslim, ‘pag tinitignan kayo para ka na ‘yung iniinsulto ka o masama kaagad ang reaction ninyo,” he said.

He did admit, though, that they relaxed their guard after being welcomed with “Assalamu alaikum,” a common Muslim greeting.

Duterte also asked Christians to be tolerant of Muslims, emphasizing that individuals of other faiths should not be treated as strangers.

“Kamo pung mga Kristiyanos, you know, try to make friends kay ang mga – tawo ra gud na, it’s just ‘yung faith nila,” she says. Whether it’s Allah or God the Father, it’s still the same for all of us in terms of religion. (And you Christians should strive to make friends because they’re also humans, it’s just that their faith is different.) We should not fight over religion (whether it is Allah or God the Father; we are all the same),” he continued.

Duterte stated that he intended to leave a “legacy” of working to bring the two faiths closer together.

“So mix it up.” With the hope – ako ba, ang akong (my) prayer is that we will be able to unite the country one day without… I’m not sure if it’s still there, but ‘yung (the) Moro hatred…” he continued.

Duterte reaffirmed his call for Muslims and Christians to be more accommodating of one another during the inauguration of the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) project.

“I’d like to inform everyone, especially Muslims — you know, my mother is of Maranao descent…

Don’t be offended if you’re with a Christian and you get ‘yung (those) stares now and then, eh huwag ninyong…

(Please don’t be offended),” he remarked.

He admitted that some Muslims may be offended by the presence of Christians in the country, but urged them to look beyond their differences.

“Whether you like it or not, nandiyan na ‘yan eh, you have to embrace the Christians there” (they live there). At saka tayo na mga Kristiyanos, eh wala na tayo na tayo na tayo na tayo na tayo na tayo (And you Christians as well). He went on to say, “This is the only world we have.”
