LEGAZPI CITY, PHILIPPINES – As part of the country’s post-pandemic economic recovery measures, Sorsogon Governor Francis Escudero stated on Monday that the government should consider granting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) additional time to pay their taxes.

In a statement, Escudero encouraged Congress to pass legislation that provides direct financial aid to MSMEs, as is done in other countries, and allows for a five-year tax payment term.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), MSMEs accounted for 99.51 percent of the country’s 957,620 businesses in 2020.

MSMEs account for 952,969 of these, whereas large businesses account for 4,651 (0.49%). Microbusinesses made up 88.77 percent of MSMEs.

He stated that if MSMEs are assisted, 99 percent of the country’s economy will recover.
